Infill Sand and Cork Sand
A typical synthetic turf field contains over 150–375 tons of infill, which is usually a combination of sand and a springy component, such as crumb rubber pellets or cork. Infill imitates topsoil by filling the space between the synthetic grass fibers in order to support the fibers, stabilize the field, and cushion the playing surface. Unlike topsoil, however, infill is installed after the turf by spreading it over the surface and pushing it deep into the base of the synthetic turf with a power broom.
Washington Rock manufactures two types of infill sand: Infill Sand and Cork Sand. Infill Sand is usually paired crumb-rubber pellets while Cork Sand pairs with eco-friendly crumb rubber alternatives like cork.
Both of these infill sand products go through a rigorous wash cycle. Each product is kiln dried in our bagging and drying plant, then stored in silos after the drying process to cool down.
Permeable Aggregates
Our Permeable Aggregates help improve the performance and lifespan of synthetic turf fields. Synthetic turf fields need to be replaced after 7–10 years, but a well-constructed base can last 3–4 times longer than the synthetic turf. Our permeable aggregates have the qualities needed to create long-lasting foundations.
A permeable aggregate base also assists in draining water away from the field. Our permeable aggregate products are made to strict specifications and have been used up and down the coast.
E-Layer Stone
Underneath the synthetic grass, an elastic layer (E-layer) made up of rubber, stone, and epoxy binder boosts shock absorption and field drainage. E-layer manufacturers trust our E-Layer Stone to assist with these important functions.
Rootzone Mix
Washington Rock offers topsoil blends and sand-compost mixes for field construction. Our Rootzone Mix is a made-to-order blend of sand and compost. We customize the specifications of the mix based on the architect’s or engineer’s requirements. We can also add the desired amount of organic additive, ranging from compost to peat moss, to achieve the correct end product.
Top Dressing Sand
Our USGA-grade top dressing sands can be used after aeration on existing fields, fairways, and greens. Top dressing sand promotes drainage, reduces thatch buildup, creates a smoother driving or putting surface, and encourages healthier grass growth. Learn more on our Golf Course products page.
