Product Description
Gravel Backfill for Pipe Zone Bedding is a sandy gravel mix with rocks up to 1½” in diameter. It’s a free-draining material to backfill the “pipe zone,” i.e., the area immediately around pipes. When properly installed, Gravel Backfill for Pipe Zone Bedding helps to stabilize pipes, drain water, and limit deflection (pipe flex).
It meets WSDOT Standard Specifications 9-03.12(3):
- 99–100% passing the 1½” screen
- 75–100% passing the 1″ screen
- 50–100% passing the 5/8″ screen
- 20–80% passing the #4 screen
- 3–24% passing the #40 screen
- up to 10% passing the #200 screen
The sand equivalent value is 35% minimum.
Product Applications
Gravel Backfill for Pipe Zone Bedding is commonly used for pipe bedding. It can also be used to line the bottom of trenches.

Gravel Backfill for Walls is a naturally occurring blend of gravelly sand and round rock up to 4″ in diameter.
Gravel Backfill for Walls meets WSDOT Standard Specifications 9-03.12(2):
- 99–100% passing the 4″ screen
- 75–100% passing the 2″ screen
- 22–66% passing the #4 screen
- up to 5% passing the #200 screen
The sand equivalent value is 60% minimum.
Product Applications
Gravel Backfill for Walls is a free-draining material used behind walls and at the bottom of trenches. Typically it’s used behind bridge abutments, concrete walls, and metal sheet piling where it may be wrapped in geotextile fabric.

Compared to Gravel Backfill for Walls, Gravel Backfill for Pipe Zone Bedding (5940-3) runs somewhat finer with a smaller maximum rock size of 1½” in diameter.
Helpful Tips

Bank Run Gravel for Trench Backfill is a naturally occurring blend of coarse sand and round rock up to 2½” in diameter.
Bank Run Gravel for Trench Backfill meets WSDOT Standard Specifications 9-03.19:
- 100% passing the 2½” screen
- 75–100% passing the 2″ screen
- 22–100% passing the #4 screen
- 0–10% passing the #200 screen
Product Applications
Bank Run Gravel for Trench Backfill is used to backfill trenches and retaining walls. It can also be used in footings and under foundations or to fill around the edges of foundations.
Similar Products
Compared to Bank Run Gravel for Trench Backfill, Gravel Backfill for Walls (1970-3) maxes out at a larger size of 4″ rock and runs coarser overall.
Aggregate for Gravel Base (3980-3) meets the same specifications as Bank Run Gravel for Trench Backfill but maxes out at 2″ in diameter. Aggregate for Gravel Base meets WSDOT Standard Specifications 9-03.10. It can be used as a structural fill and subgrade for paved surfaces. It can also be used as a trench backfill material.
Unscreened Fill Sand (1016-3) is a coarse and minimally processed sandy alternative to bank run gravel. Unscreened Fill Sand is unwashed, so it will contain a higher percentage of smaller particles like silt. It’s also unscreened and will contain larger pieces of rock compared to other coarse sand products. This is a non-spec, naturally occurring product that varies in gradation based on the makeup of the area being mined. Unscreened Fill Sand is used to fill and level areas. It can be also be used as utility bedding.
Helpful Tips
Bank Run refers to material that has been pulled straight from the banks of the pit with minimal processing. In this case, the bankrun gravel refers to rounded rocks that naturally occur in the pit and can range from very small particles to boulder-sized round rocks. Depending on the composition of the area being mined, the material may be screened to remove larger rocks.
