AASHTO #57 is a coarse aggregate commonly used in ready-mix concrete. It’s also known as ASTM #57. Washington Rock’s product is typically manufactured as a ¾” Clean.
Note that this is not the same product as 5700-3, which is a round rock.

1-¼” Clean Ballast is an 1-¼” fractured gravel product containing no fines. It’s commonly used as a road or driveway base material.
It can also be used as
- a decorative landscape rock
- foundation material
- a pavement subbase
- a trench backfill
- drain rock under downspouts
- material for erosion control
- lining for swales where runoff protection is needed
- a fill for vibro stone columns

2″ Clean Ballast is a 2″ fractured gravel product containing no fines. It’s commonly used as a driveway base in muddy areas.
It can also be used as a decorative landscape rock, slab subbase, or as an aggregate for vibro stone columns.
2″ Clean Ballast is also sold as 2″ Landscape Gravel (4011-1).

Permeable Ballast is a fractured rock product typically used as a parking lot base. A permeable base is one that allows water to pass through it.
Permeable Ballast is also used as a porous foundation base for pavement and as roadway shoulder material.

Type 4 Rail Ballast is a fractured rock product with no fines that is used on mainline railroad tracks. It is also known as AREMA #4 ballast, which is approximately a 1-½” clean product.
Type 4A Rail Ballast (3620-1) is also available. For railroad walkways, use Type 5 Rail Ballast (5650-1).
