Armorstone®
How to Make Roads Safer: Armorstone® in Las Vegas

How do you make roads safer? Add Armorstone anti-skid rock.

Armorstone rocks are as small as seeds but can keep cars from sliding off the road. Armorstone is so strong that it is used on roads throughout the United States. Recently, it made it over 1,100 miles to Las Vegas as part of Project Neon.

What is Project Neon?

Project Neon is one of the “largest public works project in Nevada history,” says the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT). With a $1 billion price tag, the project widens almost four miles of Interstate 15 (I-15), which is traveled by 300,000 vehicles every day!

I-15 runs parallel to the Las Vegas Strip.

This stretch of interstate goes right through the middle of Las Vegas and runs parallel to the Strip. It also connects Nevada to California and Arizona. Not only will Project Neon help reduce traffic congestion, but it will also make downtown Las Vegas easier to access.

How Anti-Skid Rock is Being Used in Las Vegas

Armorstone anti-skid rock is being used on new bridge overpasses along I-15 and will help make roads safer. The bridge decks are first coated with epoxy, which seals the road surface. The epoxy protects the deck material from the elements and extends the life of the road.

While the epoxy is still wet, Armorstone rock is distributed over the surface. The epoxy then dries to a rock-hard finish, holding the stones in place.

The video below features a testimonial by Mark Boisvert of the Truesdell Corporation. He explains how Armorstone differs from flint rock.

Why Armorstone Makes Las Vegas Safer

It’s amazing what these small, very hard stones can do. Without Armorstone, the epoxy coat would be too slick for cars to drive on; with Armorstone, cars are able to grip the surface of the road better. The combination of epoxy and Armorstone means that the road surface will not only last longer but will be safer for cars to drive on.

A pressurized tube is used to broadcast Armorstone over top of the epoxy coat.

Transportation agencies throughout the United States regularly use products like Armorstone to increase the safety of their roads, especially in areas where many accidents occur. In addition, Armorstone anti-skid rock has been used on parking garage decks and in polyester concrete mixes.
