Gravel
Lawnless Landscaping: Using Gravel for Paths, Patios, and Gardens

Lawns require so much water and care that some homeowners look for lower maintenance landscaping ideas. In this article, learn about how three of our clients have used our gravel to create stunning grass-less landscapes.

Gravel Garden in Bonney Lake, WA

Originally a soggy, mossy mess of a lawn, the backyard of Sue and Sam’s home was transformed using gravel from Washington Rock.

Sue’s goal was to create a peaceful space that required less work than a lawn. She used Mutual Materials cement blocks to create raised garden beds, then backfilled around the beds with 33 tons of ¾” Clean (Kapowsin Blue) gravel.

“I like the look of the back garden now,” Sue said. “The space is peaceful, low maintenance, and looks really ‘clean’ and appealing.

“There is balance and harmony here now,” she adds.

Gravel Forest Trails in Graham, WA

The sprawling display gardens of Old Goat Farm feature plants in many different environments: shade, sun, and forest.

Linda’s Garden, a tribute to a topiary lover, features boxwood topiaries accessible by a gravel path.

Gravel paths also lead visitors through a woodland garden past mossy logs, ferns, trillium, and other shade-loving plants.

“[The gravel] just makes the whole nursery look clean and delineated the surfaces and the paths through the woods,” owner Greg Graves said.

Formal Garden Gravel Paths in Seattle, WA

The formal gardens at Joe and Kirsten’s home are surrounded by extensive gravel paths. Gravel might be as important to the look and function of the garden as the plants are.

Gravel paths provide function as well as beauty.

Joe was tasked by Kirsten with replenishing the gravel paths with a gravel that had a quintessential French Country look. They landed on Washington Rock’s Sue’s goal was to create a peaceful space that required less work than a lawn. She used Mutual Materials cement blocks to create raised garden beds, then backfilled around the beds with 33 tons of ¾” Clean (Country-Style) gravel.

“That classic blue look was elusive,” Joe explained. “Washington Rock was the only place we found to have it. It really is the classic French garden look.”

Compared to the lawn on the edge of the property, the gravel-lined gardens require much less upkeep. Plants are trimmed once or twice a year, and the garden gets cleaned up in the spring and fall.

The gardens only require watering every other day for 5 minutes in the summertime. In comparison, the small lawn on the edge of the property requires 25 minutes of watering per day.
