Women in Construction Week celebrates women in the construction industry and the contributions they make. We’re celebrating by learning more about the women who work at Washington Rock and how they contribute to our business. They describe their roles and their interests in their own words.

I test and verify that our materials meet specifications for current projects and jobs. I also prepare samples for customers and sales team members.
My favorite part of the job is being in the lab and performing tests on samples that we get from the plant.

I talk to customers and build orders in the system. I also communicate with the companies that will be hauling the material. Being a newly hired teammate for Washington Rock, I have been cross training to learn how to operate the scale house and test soil samples. I also spent time in the Quality Control Lab to learn about our products. I’m fascinated by the attention to detail it takes to make the best and most consistent products for our customers.
So far, it is hard to pick just one thing about my job that is my favorite. I enjoy learning new things, and I am very excited to see what the future holds at Washington Rock. Every day there is something different. Being able to understand how the entire company functions is a fun.

I used to be the office manager many years ago when it was a much smaller company, so I oversaw every aspect of the accounting. Now I get to use my experience to help out with special projects and accounting and office transitions as needed. I love connecting the office with operations with things like job costing and helping people more effectively utilize our software programs.
It has been cool to see the growth of the company in terms of improvements we have made with our software use, such as the implementation of our new ticketing system, the use of streamlined purchase orders, and the beginning of the process to track preventative maintenance in our accounting software. My favorite part of the job is when I feel like I helped someone else do their job.

As the weighmaster at King Creek Pit, I weigh trucks, print tickets, track loads, collect soil samples, and more!
I love the pace of my job, which is constant. There is always something to do, and I love that. I also enjoy and respect the company and people I work for.

I oversee the day-to-day activities in the accounting office, ensuring what is posted to our financial statements is completed in a timely manner and accurately, making corrections as needed. I help train other team members in the office and update them as changes are made.
My favorite part of my job is getting to work with so many different people both within and outside of the company. I enjoy working with and helping out wherever I can.

Content development and event planning are my main roles at Washington Rock. I create content like social media posts, photos, videos, blog posts, and advertising materials. I worked with a web team back in 2016 to develop our current website and wrote most of the content (so if you see any errors, let me know!). You might see me at community events like Dozer Day or Meeker Days. I work with the sales team and office staff to brainstorm themes and activities for events, and I develop the signage, stickers, freebies, and displays.
Occasionally I manage short-term projects. Currently I’m managing the corporate office relocation and remodel.
My favorite part of my job is getting to meet clients and vendors and learning more about their passions. I also love talking to and working with my fellow team members. Anything I can do to make their lives better, I will do it, whether it’s planning an awesome Christmas party or helping to improve facilities.

One part of my position involves weighing empty gravel trucks into the quarry before they’re loaded and again weighing the same truck once they are loaded. I provide the drivers with a scale ticket that lets him or her know which product and how much of that product has been loaded on their truck. It also shows the job name and location for where this product will delivered.
By ensuring the accuracy of the scale tickets, I help the main office confirm that invoices are correct before being sent to customers.
It’s not just big trucks that visit the Kapowsin Quarry though. We have a fair number of homeowners looking to buy products for home improvement jobs both big and small. I assist these customers by suggesting products for their particular jobs. If a customer asks for information beyond my scope of knowledge, I make sure to put them in touch with the correct person here at the pit that can answer all their questions.
My favorite part of my job is the customer service I get to provide to our customers, whether it is helping them find the right product or just checking in on how a driver’s day is going. I enjoy learning about our drivers, their families, and what they do away from work. If I can put a smile on someone’s face that may be having a tough day before they leave the quarry, I feel like I have had a great day at work.

I move material, load trucks, and mix product together to create specific products for specific jobs.
I love working outside of an office and look forward to each day since it’s never the same. I may be running a loader or operating a giant haul truck—you just never know.

Each day I receive packing slips, scan them into the system, and enter the information into Spectrum (the accounting software). I also do data entry for getting vendors paid. I make purchase orders and do data entry for meter reading. I make credit card expense reports and close out work orders, too.
What I love about my job is knowing when I wake up in the morning that I don’t have a one- or two-hour commute. It takes maybe 8 minutes to get to work, and I love that. I love making a positive difference by helping Jay and Josh in purchasing. We work together as a team, and I can help have a positive impact on their day.

I manage the billing for our customers, and I track when payments are sent in. I am basically a one-woman collection agency. I also have been with Washington Rock in many different departments over the years, so I am able to help out with a lot of tasks outside of the accounting department as well.
My favorite part of my job is being able to have my hands in different departments and being able to see how everything flows together. I also like seeing the money come in!

I provide financial and administrative support. My job entails processing payments, verifying invoices, and reconciling our expenses to keep track of what is going on within the business. I also attend to and resolve pay-related queries, prepare cash deposits, and process paychecks.
My favorite part of the job is definitely the interactions with my peers and fellow team members. We’ve got a great team here in the accounting department, making every day fun and full of giggles. AND we still get work done!

I started off at Washington Rock over 7 years ago as a sales assistant, and I quickly transitioned to Armorstone doing quotes and shipping material. Now I am in charge of all Armorstone logistics and administration. I coordinate with customers and brokers to ensure that everyone receives their shipments on time. I do quotes, submittals, customer relations, and anything needed to help Armorstone become the success it is today.
Something I love most about my job is the people I get to meet along the way. I enjoy building relationships with my customers and brokers, and I love the people I work with. I also enjoy traveling all over the country, whether it’s to a conference, jobsite, or a customer meeting.

I help our customers find which material works best for their projects and how much material they need. I also ensure they have a great experience from beginning to end. I’m always available to answer questions, make recommendations, and help in any way possible, even if it means referring business to any of our fantastic partners.
I enjoy having new puzzles to solve every day and constantly learning about new applications for our materials. I also enjoy participating in community events like Dozer Day. It’s a great feeling knowing that I helped a customer achieve their goals, whether that be the backyard of their dreams, a new and improved park for the public to enjoy, or a stronger and safer roadway to make everyday life a little better for everyone. The Washington Rock Team works hard, so occasionally you can find me helping in the scales, accounting, or dispatch to help lighten the load.
