Orting, WA—Washington Rock’s First Annual Food Drive Competition was a smashing success this holiday season with 430 pounds of food donated by haulers and employees.
The winner of the competition was Edgar from Walrath Trucking with 230 pounds of food donated. Edgar will receive a Washington Rock hoodie, beanie, keychain, hat, and a gift card—plus the glory of being the first-ever winner!
The food drive was dreamed up and organized by King Creek Pit scale house operator Dustie Northey. She also led and organized a food drive in November, raising another 100 pounds of food for a total seasonal haul of 530 pounds of food.
“The idea for the food drive came from knowing a lot of people that work for the government,” Dustie explained. “When the shutdown happened, I saw how it affected their families, and I wanted to try and help in whatever way I could. It was especially tough seeing kids go through that.”

Dustie also has a special place in her heart for people who run animal rescues, which is why she chose to make the food drive for both pets and people. Human food was donated to the Eatonville Family Agency and pet food was donated to Gurrs and Purrs Rescue in Yelm.
“I used to do craft fairs at the Eatonville Community Center and saw firsthand how caring the volunteers were for the food bank. I knew it was a very deserving place for the people food donations,” Dustie said.
Gurrs and Purrs fosters and finds families for pets in the Thurston County community.
Dustie tracked each donation and posted updates on her Instagram page. Her goal was to donate 200 pounds of food and was excited to more than double her goal.
“I’m truly thankful for the drivers and the Washington Rock employees that donated,” she said. “Without them, none of this would’ve happened!”
