Product Description
Coarse Sand is a coarse, washed sand. It contains less fines (smaller particles like silt) and a larger proportion of coarse-sized sand grains compared to sand products like Top Dressing Sand and Utility Sand.
Coarse Sand is a non-spec product, making it a more affordable option for projects without strict construction requirements.
Product Applications
Coarse Sand is a multi-purpose product, the “Swiss Army Knife” of sands. It can be used to fill sand bags and line ditches for pipe bedding projects like sprinkler installations.
Some customers use Coarse Sand in horse arenas and sandboxes.
Similar Products
WSDOT Class 2 Sand (1032-3) is a similar, spec alternative to Coarse Sand. Utility Sand and Top Dressing Sand run a little finer than Coarse Sand.

Product Description
WSDOT Class 2 Sand contains less fines (smaller particles like silt) and a larger proportion of coarse-sized sand grains compared to sand products like Top Dressing Sand and Utility Sand.

Sand grain sizes run between the #100 screen (0.15 mm) and the 3/8″ screen (9.525 mm) with 1–2% fines. Particles range in shape from subangular to subround.
WSDOT Class 2 Sand meets WSDOT Standard Specifications 9-03.1(2)B for concrete sand:
- 99–100% passing 3/8″ screen
- 95–100% passing #4 screen
- 45–80% passing #16 screen
- 10–30% passing #50 screen
- 2–10% passing #100 screen
- 0–2.5% passing #200 screen
Product Applications
In addition to being used in concrete mixes, WSDOT Class 2 Sand can also be used as trench or pipe bedding and as a filter material.
Some customers prefer WSDOT Class 2 Sand for sandboxes and horse arenas.
