On Tuesday, team members from KLB Construction toured King Creek Pit and Kapowsin Quarry. The tour was a rare opportunity to showcase the mining process to one of our valued construction partners.
Washington Rock has supplied many important infrastructure projects through KLB Construction, including the Monroe Avenue storm system project in Renton, Washington. Kapowsin Quarry produced and delivered over 73,000 tons of crushed rock for the Monroe Avenue project.

Washington Rock sales representative Tim Carlson and QC Lab manager, Ryan Hogg, hosted the tour and answered questions.
The group started the tour on the backside of King Creek Pit by the long belt, a 3,000-foot long conveyor belt that feeds the primary plant. Ryan explained how material is excavated from the banks of King Creek Pit and deposited into a hopper. The hopper empties onto the conveyor belt. Then the conveyor belt carries the material to the primary plant where it is separated by size where it can be stockpiled or crushed down.
Before moving on to Kapowsin Quarry, the tour group viewed components of the wash plant and learned about the drying plant where Armorstone products are made and prepared for shipment to projects throughout the U.S.

At Kapowsin Quarry, the group got a rare view of the entire quarry operation from a hillside overlook. Then the tour ended with a closeup view of the new crushing setup in the basement of Kapowsin Quarry.
“Learning about our facilities helps those who source our materials understand who we are and how our products are made,” Ryan said after the tour concluded. “It’s important to show our clients firsthand all the effort that goes into serving them.”
